Wildfire Preparation: Defensible Space and Tree Management
While wildfire risk is lower in Central Illinois than western states, preparation is wise. Managing trees creates defensible space and reduces fire risk.
Zone One: Home Hardening
The immediate 5-foot zone around structures should be clear of vegetation and dead material. Use mulch instead of bark chips (bark chips can carry fire).
Zone Two: Reduced Fuel
From 5-30 feet out, space trees further apart and remove lower branches. This slows fire spread and reduces fuel.
Zone Three: General Spacing
Beyond 30 feet, maintain general forest health. Thin overstocked areas and remove dead trees and branches.
Remove Dead Wood
Dead trees and fallen wood should be cleared. They're fire accelerants.
Clear Gutters and Roofs
Leaves and needles in gutters and on roofs catch embers. Keep them clear.
Prune High Branches
Remove branches hanging over structures. These create a "ladder" for fire to climb.
Professional Assessment
Arborists can assess your property and recommend specific tree work to improve fire resilience.
Proactive tree management is your best defense against wildfire risk.
